One of the prime reasons people don't support gay rights is the Bible.
I have strong feelings on religion, which I will try to contain in this post.
Basically, the Bible dictates that "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." (Leviticus 18:22).
What results is that strong Christians say that they object to gay rights because the Bible doesn't allow it.
Here are some objections to this claim:
1) The Bible, while important in the hearts of many, should not be the law of the land. If a man wants to sleep with another man and be an "abomination," that's his choice, isn't it? Leave it to the person who wants to get married if he/she feels that being legally wed to his/her loved one overrules the possibility of damnation. The Bible says nothing like, "Thou must deny a law allowing gay people to get married." No. Because one follows the Bible, that doesn't mean that person should have to inflict his/her own beliefs upon another. That should be up for them to decide, as much as the first person has the right to decide if he/she is a Christian.
2) By using the Bible as an excuse to deny people happiness, you are violating two of the codes of America: "liberty and justice for all," and "the separation of church and state." Separation of Church and State" is not hard to decipher; you keep your Bible out of the government, we keep the government out of your church. Meanwhile, by not allowing two people who love each other to get married, I believe you are violating the right of justice for all Americans. These people are our equals. Who cares if they are both men? They want to be matrimonially bonded. We have no right to stop them.
3) Being gay is not a choice. This is indisputable. Scientist have isolated the gay gene. Hear that? Being gay is as much a part of a person's choice as their skin color. If you believe in God, you believe that people are his creation. Why are you objecting to God's creation? If you still believe that it is a choice, think about this. Do you really think that a teenager would want to be kicked out of his/her house by his/her parents? Do you think he/she wants to think that God doesn't love him/her? Do you think he/she wants to stop talking to her parents forever? I don't think that any person in their right mind would.
4) Also, studies have shown that the average straight lovers have sex more often as boyfriend/girlfriend than husband/wife. So by allowing gay people to marry, we would be decreasing the amount of sex. Which is what the Bible prohibits.
I hope this has made an impression on you.
Stay happy.
